Sterling Planet Begins Offering Carbon Offsets from Project Approved by Environmental Defense Fund

Offsets are included on CarbonOffsetList.org, Environmental Defense Fund’s guide to credible, high-quality carbon offset projects

ATLANTA, GA, September 10, 2008 – Sterling Planet, a leading supplier of renewable energy, energy-efficiency products and carbon solutions, today unveiled its new retail offer of carbon offsets recognized for quality by the Environmental Defense Fund. These offsets from the Greenville County Landfill Gas Utilization Project in Greer, S.C., are included on CarbonOffsetList.org, the Environmental Defense Fund’s guide to credible, high-quality carbon offset projects.

To make the list, the South Carolina methane capture and destruction project passed an expert panel’s review using the Environmental Defense Fund’s stringent criteria for quality. These standards require, in part, that a project’s carbon offsets represent real, permanent and third-party certified and verified emission reductions that go beyond a business-as-usual scenario.

Sterling Planet’s source project also bears the stamp of approval from Green-e Climate and the Voluntary Carbon Standard. Green-e Climate has certified these offsets, demonstrating that they meet or exceed strict standards for project verification and measurement, consumer transparency and truth-in-marketing claims. The project itself was developed in accordance with the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), a robust global benchmark that guarantees project integrity and environmental value. The VCS-certified project began operations in 2007.

“Sterling Planet is proud that our carbon offsets source project has earned the confidence of the Environmental Defense Fund,” said Mel Jones, Sterling Planet President and Chief Executive Officer. “We’re honored that the source project passed the excellence screening and has been included among the elite few on CarbonOffsetList.org.”

Carbon offsets are a true environmental commodity representing a measured reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By purchasing these offsets, consumers offset their environmental footprints and stimulate market demand for GHG emission reduction projects, leading to more projects that can help mitigate the effects of atmospheric carbon buildup. Consumers can access Sterling Planet’s online offer of carbon offsets at www.CarbonOffsetList.org, where the Greenville County project appears on an alphabetical project roster.

At the Greenville County Landfill Gas Utilization Project, carbon offsets result from the capture and destruction of methane, preventing its release into the atmosphere. A prevalent greenhouse gas, methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping atmospheric heat.

“Methane is potent but only has a comparatively short atmospheric lifetime of about 12 years,” says Marcus Krembs, Sterling Planet’s Director of Greenhouse Gas Programs. “For these reasons, methane reduction is an effective near-term strategy for controlling greenhouse gas concentrations. We support this strategy with our carbon offsets from a U.S.-based methane project, the first project of its type with Green-e Climate certification.”
