Bear Mountain Wind Park

Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada

The first fully operational wind project in British Columbia.

This facility is the result of an energy development initiative driven by a community-based energy cooperative. In 2003, local leaders grew determined to bring wind power to the area, forming Peace Energy Cooperative to that end. In 2004, the cooperative acquired the exclusive right to investigate and develop Bear Mountain for a commercial-scale wind park. With high winds and close proximity to roads and transmission lines, Bear Mountain proved to be an ideal location. In 2006, BC Hydro contracted for the project's electrical output. AltaGas financed and owns a majority of the project. The cooperative remains involved as a partner and receives guaranteed income for a 20-year term.
